Topic
History, Geography, Music, Art and Design and Design and Technology are taught through our Dame Ellen Pinsent Topic curriculum. Each Topic focuses on one of the curriculum areas, for example 'Africa' might be a Geography topic but 'Ancient Egypt' might be a History Topic. Each topic has a key subject focus which is prioritised, although most topics will include aspects from all of the foundation subjects.
Topics usually launch with a Wow Day to excite and 'hook' the pupils into their new topics. These can include visitors in school, trips, dressing-up or music days to immerse and engage pupils.
We follow a two year cycle in topic to ensure that the breadth of the National Curriculum is covered. It also ensures that pupils experience different topics if they remain in the same class for two years. Topics, where possible, link well with the school's Science curriculum. British Values are also covered within most of the class topics.
Our Roots, Seedlings and Orchard pathways follow the Early Years Foundation Stage Curriculum, 'Development Matters'. Their topics follow pupils' interests.
Topic homework is set and completed over the course of each half term. There are also a number of whole school theme weeks across the year, including 'Proud to Be Me' and 'Enterprise' week in Autumn term. Other topics have included 'Community Week', 'Science Week', 'Do and Discover Week' and 'Sports and Well-being Week'.
Topic homework for each class can be found on the class pages of the website. The whole school overview can be downloaded from the link below.
