Class Topics

Summer 1

The children will be learning all about South America and the Rainforest.

Geography Purpose & Aims:

To inspire in pupils a curiosity and fascination about the world and its people and equip them with knowledge about diverse places, people, resources and natural & human environments. Their growing knowledge about the world should help them to deepen their understanding of the interaction between physical and human processes, and of the formation and use of landscapes and environments.

The aim of this unit is to:

  • Develop contextual knowledge of the location of globally significant places, both terrestrial and marine
  • Understand the processes that give rise to key physical and human geographical features of the world (e.g. formation of the pyramids, desserts, destruction of landmarks over time, weather)
  • Help children to develop knowledge about the world
  • Help children begin to name, locate and identify characteristics of significant countries in the world
  • Help children to understand geographical similarities and differences through studying another country compared to our own
  • Help children to identify seasonal and daily weather patterns in another country
  • Enable children to use world maps, atlases and globes to identify another country/continent and its surrounding seas
  • Allow children to use basic geographical vocabulary such as city, river, hill, mountain, sea season, weather, town, village, shop, factory, farm, office, port, desert, building, structure, market
