PE
PE is a fundamental part of education at Dame Ellen and focuses specifically on improving and embedding essential life skills.
Below is the intent behind our PE curriculum within the Woodlands pathway, how we implement this and the impact is has on our children.
Where possible, we link our PE units to our whole-school topic each half-term. The table below shows the units that Woodlands pathway will be following this academic year 2023-24:
Swimming: Every class within the Woodlands pathway spends a term swimming. We use Northfield swimming baths and the children develop confidence and safety within the water.
Theralympics: Each class delivers our bespoke program called 'Theralympics' a minimum of once every week. Theralympics is a fine and gross motor programme that incorporates fundamental skills needed for everyday life skills which the pupils at Dame Ellen access (Refer to your pathway documents for further guidance). The programme is broken down into five key areas (Body, Ball, Balance, Brain, Build), which are focused with separate activities. Each of the classes follow timetables which are linked to the activities and class staff complete recording sheets on the children’s progress. Every class within school has a theralympics box which contains all of the items needed to fulfill the programme,
Tennis, Cricket & Golf: We work closely with local sports clubs and frequently offer additional sports coaching to children, delivered by experienced coaches, including tennis, cricket and golf.
Football: We are proud to have a school football team who complete against teams from other schools at Aston Villa Football Club training ground.
